This week students handed in their annotated copies of The Veldt, had a small group discussion, and then wrote theme statements. These will be used for an assignment next week.  We also participated in an activity where students (with a partner) learned about one Civic Mirror Hex from the student manual and then taught the class about that Hex.

September 8 - 12

This week we set up our Civic Mirror Countries and one class got to do a practice round. This is a simulation that mirrors the curricular outcomes in Social Studies and students will participate year long. We also learned about Media bias and introduced a final task where students write their own biased article or Instagram posts that use at least 3 bias techniques. In Language Arts we started learning how to write a rant.

September 3 - 6

This week in Humanities, students created their identity cards, which will be used in the classroom for grouping, answering questions, seating plans, etc. They also provided information about themselves by writing to their teacher about some things they believe will bring them success in grade 9. Students also started working on our Civic Mirror simulation by groups creating their own countries, which will be presented and voted on to be our simulated country for the rest of the year.
