  • Teacher RECOMMENDATIONS:
    • As part of the transition to high school, our teachers make course recommendations based on each student’s progress throughout the year. After the first reporting period, high schools request that we provide an initial recommendation for the level of coursework where we believe each student will be most successful. In May, our teachers reassess these recommendations and, when necessary, make adjustments.
    • It’s important to note that these are recommendations based on what your child has done in grade 9 and throughout middle school. If parents wish to explore a different course level, they can connect with the high school’s guidance counsellors in the fall to discuss potential changes. However, based on our experience, these recommendations generally provide the best starting point for a smooth and successful transition into high school.

Answers to Parent Questions

Q - Is there summer school?

A - Information on summer school opportunities can be found on the CBE website: Summer School

Q - What does transportation look like? What are the costs?

A - Transportation is all determined by the City of Calgary with some consultation from the CBE. The City determines where and when the bus stops will be. At this point we do not have information on this topic, but you can call the City or access the following websites for more information:

Q - Will Copperfield have a route?

A- At this point we do not have the information on routes for next year. The City will update when this is ready and LBHS will also update their page when it comes out from the City of Calgary.

Q - Can you move between AP classes and regular classes?

A - Yes, in discussion with your guidance counsellor, you may decide on different routes through high school.

Q - Will there be another open house at LBHS?

A - There are no more opportunities this year for open houses like the one before the winter break.

Q - Why are electives different between schools?

A - Lord Beaverbrook has one of the best and varied complimentary programs of any high school in the city. These differ between schools depending on the facilities the school has and the expertise of the teachers.

Q - What happens if my child takes summer classes to get ahead?

A - Taking classes early or in the summer can offer opportunities for the student to fit other classes into their schedule such as more/different complimentary courses or taking a class from a grade ahead (Provided there is space). As they move through school, it may also create a space for no class to be taken, also called a spare. Be cautious to ensure that you will have enough credits to graduate before you deicide to take a spare.

Q - What is AP? (Advance Placement)

A - Advanced Placement

Q - Is there an Indigenous Liaison?

A - LBHS currently has a Indigenous Student Graduation Coach. Their role is to support Indigenous students in their journey to graduation.

Q - How are core courses decided when entering grade 10?

A - The current middle school teachers make recommendations based on the students current academic standing. The high school guidance team registers each student based on these recommendations. These recommendations are in the best interest of the student. Students can work their way into different classes while in high school when they have success at the current level or class that is recommended.
