Mathematics at Dr. Martha Cohen School

We all use math every day; to predict weather, to tell time, to handle money. Math is more than formulas and equations. It's logic. It's rationality. It's using your mind to solve the biggest mysteries we know. At Dr. Martha Cohen School, our Mathematics Department is committed to building confident, capable, and curious mathematical thinkers. We strive to create a learning environment where students develop a strong foundation in mathematical concepts, strengthen problem-solving skills, and learn to apply their understanding to real-world situations. Through explicit instruction, collaborative learning, hands-on activities, and opportunities to explain their mathematical thinking, we encourage students to take risks, persevere through challenges, and recognize that growth in mathematics comes through practice and reflection.

Personalized Learning Through IXL

To support learning both in and beyond the classroom, students have access to IXL Mathematics, an interactive platform that provides curriculum-aligned practice tailored to individual learning needs. With immediate feedback, targeted skill development, and progress monitoring, IXL helps students strengthen foundational skills, revisit concepts, and build confidence at their own pace. Teachers use IXL to support classroom instruction, identify areas for growth, and encourage students to take greater ownership of their learning.

How can students access IXL?

Students can access IXL online at www.ixl.com using their school-provided login information. Students should use the account credentials provided by their teacher and select the appropriate grade level and mathematical skills assigned or recommended for practice. Families are encouraged to check in with their child about current learning goals and encourage regular, focused practice at home.

A School-Wide Commitment to Growth: Response to Intervention (RTI)

Our commitment to mathematics extends beyond individual classrooms through our school-wide Response to Intervention (RTI) approach. During a dedicated 30-minute daily intervention block, students receive targeted support based on their learning needs. Teachers use assessment information and ongoing observations to identify areas of strength, recognize gaps in understanding, and provide focused opportunities for skill development.

Across the school, this collaborative approach allows us to respond proactively to student needs, reinforce essential numeracy skills, and help students build the foundations necessary for future success. By working together across grade levels and subject areas, our staff strives to ensure that students receive timely, purposeful support to help them progress.

Families and Mathematics: Growing Together

Families play an important role in developing positive attitudes toward mathematics. You can support your child's learning by asking about what they are working on in class, encouraging them to explain how they solved a problem, and celebrating effort, persistence, and progress—not just correct answers.

Our call to families: Encourage your child to log in to IXL regularly, practise the skills recommended by their teacher, and talk with you about what they are learning. Even short, consistent practice sessions can help reinforce understanding and build confidence. If you have questions about accessing IXL or would like to learn more about your child's mathematical learning goals, please connect with their mathematics teacher.

At Dr. Martha Cohen School, we believe every student can grow as a mathematician. By combining purposeful classroom instruction, personalized practice through IXL, targeted school-wide intervention, and strong partnerships with families, we work together to help every learner develop the skills, confidence, and resilience to succeed in mathematics.

Our Math program involves:

  • Applying strategies for computation to real world situations such as taxes, unit conversions, measurement and geometry
  • Highly practical and hands-on problems and skills
  • Rich problem-solving activities in collaboration with other students
  • Using technology to develop, demonstrate and communicate mathematical understanding
