Welcome to Grade 6!

2025 - 2026 School Year

First PAT - May 25th, ELA Part A

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we near our first PAT on Monday, May 25th, 9am - teachers have been preparing students so that they can be ready - and also to reduce some stress and worry about the process of the exam.

We have begun talking about the exam process, and next week we will be going over the rules and expectations for the test and we wanted to reach out with this information to families directly in case there were any questions.

During the test students are allowed to have:

  • A water bottle
  • a pencil and eraser
  • a quiet reading book
  • a discreet snack (something that is not in a loud wrapper, something that is not sticky or greasy as the children are not allowed to walk around the room for hand washing, and something that does not run the risk of damaging a computer - ie yogurt or a spillable item)
  • a paper dictionary or thesaurus

**Your child is allowed to bring a paper dictionary or thesaurus from home if they want, however this is not mandatory. We do have some in each classroom but not entire class sets. While this is not mandatory, some students find them helpful while writing and editing.**

Students are not allowed to have:

  • cell phones
  • smart watches
  • other electronic devices

*Students with diabetes monitors and similar items (previously approved by the office, and something they have been using during the school year on a regular and consistent basis) are not included in the electronics ban for the test.*

If your child forgets their smart watch on, or a phone in their pocket - teachers have safe spaces to lock them up in their classrooms until the test is done.

The test itself runs an initial two hours (9:00am-11:00 am) and students are allowed an additional two hours on top of that should they need it (9:00 - 1:00). For this test they are doing two large pieces of writing, both a narrative story, and a persuasive opinion paragraph. A good night’s sleep the evening beforehand and a breakfast before coming will help everyone have the energy they need to show their amazing capabilities. Everyone has worked hard this school year to prepare and we are excited to see all of their hard work showcased on this first test.

Take care,

Your Grade 6 Teaching Team
