We’ve got some exciting news to share about our garden club! This year, we’ve been working hard with students, teachers, a council member/school parent, and volunteers to create a garden group. We’ve brought the joy of farm-to-table learning right into our school gardens, and it’s been an absolute blast!
From October onwards, our garden club members have been having a field day (pun intended!). They’ve grown, planted, and harvested their own food, and they’re absolutely thrilled with their creations. Imagine this: a fresh spinach salad at lunch, made wifood they just harvested less than ten minutes before, eaten right there in the gardens! It was a sight to behold, and the students absolutely loved it.
But that’s not all! They’ve also been taking home kale and scallions, and before the end of the year, they’ll be able to harvest onion, lettuce, and potatoes. And guess what? When they return in the fall, they’ll be greeted with a bountiful harvest of tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, and maybe even some watermelons! The watermelons are an exciting experiment, but you never know what nature has in store!
We’re so grateful to all the students who participated in our garden club. And if you have a returning student in grades 7 through 9, please keep an eye out for a garden club sign-up in September. The more hands we have, the easier the work will be, and the more fun we’ll have!
Additionally, very recently the school was awarded an AMA School Garden Studio bursary which will allow the school to make improvements in the gardens for the coming years and ensure students have the materials, tools, and supplies they need at hand, for success.
We can’t wait for returning students and families to see what the garden has to offer in the fall!
