Learning From The Land in Autumn

As autumn settles in we begin to notice the changes happening around us. The days become shorter, the air gets cooler, and the land slowly prepares for winter. Each season brings its own lessons, and autumn offers us an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and appreciate what the land provides. It is also a time to think about our role and responsibilities in caring for the natural world.

There is so much to notice at this time of year.

The leaves change colour and begin to fall, animals prepare for the colder months, and the landscape around us takes on a different look and feel.

These changes remind us that change is a natural part of life.

They also encourage us to pay closer attention to the world around us and recognize the many relationships that support and sustain all living things.

Through Indigenous ways of knowing, we are reminded that the land is not simply the place where we live, work, and play. It is also a teacher. When we take the time to observe and learn from the natural world we can develop a deeper understanding of patience, resilience, gratitude, and our responsibilities to one another and the environment.

Taking a moment to slow down, notice the changes around us, and give thanks for what the land provides helps us build a stronger connection to the places we call home. There is always something to learn when we take the time to listen to the land.

Elder Saa’kokoto asks students and educators to look closely at nature to navigate life's changes smoothly. He poses the guiding questions: "How can we be wisely aware of the changes occurring around us?" and "What can the beings of the land, water, and sky teach us?"
